What are contextual backlinks, and why do they matter?

By Khalil, founder of Serpify Media · October 29, 2026 · 5 min read

A contextual backlink is a link placed inside the main content of a page, within a sentence that makes sense of it. For example, a marketing article that mentions a data source and links to it, or a tutorial that links to a tool it recommends.

  • Footer and sidebar links. Often sitewide, with little surrounding context. They tell search engines less about relevance.
  • Directory and profile links. Easy to get and easy to overdo. They have some use for brand signals but limited impact on competitive rankings.
  • Contextual links. Surrounded by relevant text, so the topic and purpose of the link are clear.

Why they matter

Search engines look at the words around a link to understand what the linked page is about and whether the link was a genuine recommendation. A link inside a well-written, relevant article is more likely to look natural and to send real readers your way.

  • A relevant page. The article is about a topic close to yours.
  • A real site. A genuine publisher with an audience. Our checklist for vetting sites covers what to look for.
  • Natural anchor text. The words fit the sentence rather than being forced keywords.
  • A useful destination. The linked page genuinely helps the reader.
  • A sensible position. Within the body, not hidden in a block of unrelated links.

How to earn them

The three most dependable routes are guest posts on relevant sites (see what guest posting is), creating resources that others want to cite, and personal outreach to editors who can add your link where it helps their readers.

Planning a natural mix

Vary your anchor text between your brand name, your domain, generic phrases and descriptive wording. Spread links across more than one page. A steady, mixed profile looks natural and holds up better over time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a contextual backlink?

A link placed inside the main body of a relevant page, surrounded by text that explains why the link is useful. It reads as a natural recommendation.

Are contextual links better than footer or sidebar links?

Generally yes. Links inside relevant content show clearer topical relevance and a real editorial decision. Site-wide footer and sidebar links tend to carry less weight and can look manipulative when overused.

How do I get contextual backlinks?

Through guest posts on relevant sites, useful content others want to cite, and outreach to editors who can add your link where it helps their readers.
